SAINT GOBAIN

The Montage; a tapestry of interventions, art & spaces stitched together. The buildings aesthetic took inspiration from the existing historical structure. Vertical and horizontal spaces encourage interaction between residents, students and pedestrians. Kinetic interventions like the hydroponic shed, bike-park and waste pick-up points are integrated with the heritage building by linked pathways. The building and site is decorated by art murals and sensitive green landscaping is seen throughout. Energy efficient strategies helped to achieve an ecological neighborhood.

GIBA GORGE

This site site sits between the Giba Gorge Bike Park and the Ekukhanyeni Settlement. This steep terrain has a cool climate and is a natural belt for both residents and tourists to enjoy. The Masterplan was influenced by the topography, vehicular routes and pedestrian movements. The socio-economic Urban Planning guided the scheme into creating an integrated community which can benefit from proposed trade markets, taxi stops, civil buildings, farms and energy saving interventions.

This design, adjacent to the pedestrian bridge over the river, was influenced by the various routes and stops, trade markets and the proposed auction house and farm. The aim of the site was to create an ecological community through connected living and having a result of zero-waste farming to create jobs and eventually lead to economic empowerment.

A central communal courtyard was established to integrate the residents and public, allowing for a neutral space with visual access. Accessibility to the building is on all sides, emphasizing a free flow, with semi-formalized trading spaces provided on the ground floor. The first and second floor has a residential aspect. The restaurant and butcher plays on the idea of food culture where above it is commercial which services the administration for the auction house.

HIGH RISE

Albert Park was once the pride of Central Durban. A beautiful lush green belt that stretches across between the industrial, commercial and retail areas. It serves as a buffer to soften the harsh Durban Harbor, providing ample open space for relaxation and folly.

Post-Apartheid the precinct has fallen into decay due to neglect and disinterest but still retains its potential of what it was once to us.

COMMUNITY CENTRE

Glenwood is one of Durbans most economically diverse suburbs. Its dynamic community spirits enhanced by the greenery of its parks, its colonnade of trees along road edges and its quaint colonial style homes.

Bulwer Park lies in the heart of Berea and the surrounding context proves that the old and new don't collide; they co-exist harmoniously in a nostalgic atmosphere. The richness of the cultural heritage is viable in the skeletons of the architecture where the locals are hanging on to the threads of memories by evolving with the times.

Redevelopment and environmental, social and spatial activation brings hope of a functionally beautiful place, new life, a home for all
